O’Driscoll encourages bid for Cup

-

IRISH great Brian O’Driscoll has urged Australia to throw up a hand to again host the Rugby World Cup after a shock backflip yesterday delivered the 2023 tournament to France over South Africa.

The French will host the tournament after World Rugby’s 39-member council voted to overturn the Rugby World Cup Board’s own unanimous recommendation that South Africa was best equipped to stage the showpiece event.

South African Rugby chief executive Jurie Roux said they would try again in 2027. And O’Driscoll encouraged Australia to do the same.

“If I was Australia I’d be putting my hand up pretty soon,” O’Driscoll said.

“They’ve done it before. Look at France ... repeat World Cups in 16 years.”
