EARLY BOARDS GET THE WAVE IN PUMPING SWELL

- NICHOLAS MCELROY nicholas.mcelroy@news.com.au

THE Gold Coast surf isn’t supposed to look like this in spring.

Boardriders were climbing over themselves to get into 2m waves whipped up by an early season low pressure system off New Zealand yesterday.

The chaos of surfers dropping in on and dodging each other is expected to continue today.

Swellnet forecaster Craig Brokensha said the pumping swell was expected to peak overnight and would decrease in size into Thursday.

“We should continue to see 1.5m set waves this morning and into the afternoon,” Mr Brokensha said.

“People have been making the most of this because the swell is so out of season.

“Usually we see poor swell and consistent northerly winds throughout spring.”

Mr Brokensha said the east south-easterly swell was a great start to the summer surf season when powerful storms in the Coral Sea produce epic waves.

The forecast is not looking as good for those on land, according to Weatherzone forecaster Kim Westcott.

She said the Gold Coast could expect overcast conditions and light rain this week.

“We have a big high pressure system producing all this wind and rain,” Ms Westcott said.

She said temperatures this week would be almost 2C below the November average of 26.8C.
