GYM YOGA MOVES TO IMPROVE MENTAL HEALTH

-

WOMEN are being encouraged to bend over backwards today for a good cause – and great health.

Fernwood gyms around the country will host yoga sessions today as part of a Move for Mental Health fundraiser for the Fernwood Foundation.

A registered charity that provides support for women with anxiety and depression, the foundation also equips women with information and practical strategies for good mental health.

A 5000 year old Indian body of knowledge, yoga is all about harmonising the body with the mind and breath through breathing techniques, yoga postures (asanas) and meditation.

Fernwood Robina instructor Karen Rutty has been practising and teaching yoga for 17 years.

“Everyone is starting to realise the true benefits of some form of yoga,” she said.

“Some people don’t like that it’s slow – some gym people feel it’s not an essential part of their workout – but what it does do for your body is get it ready for the harder workout.”

Fernwood Robina will host two Move for Mental Health yoga classes today at 6.15am and 10.15am. The classes cost $20, with funds to benefit the foundation.
