WE OFTEN read about problems on our roads. Common comments from our transport, police and motoring organisations include speeding, running red lights and lack of consideration to other drivers.

Some suggestions have been to increase the use of speed cameras, which I think is a bandaid answer.

It is an attempt by stealth to catch speeding motorists but does nothing for the other problems. It is also an expensive exercise taking officers off the road.

I suggest a trial period all police cars including unmarked cars having the blue light flashing at all times when the car is mobile.

This, I believe, would remind motorists that they could be caught doing something wrong. It would be cheaper than speed cameras being used behind a tree.

Maybe this suggestion could be tried in different areas to start with the M1, Centenary and Gold Coast highways. It appears most of our “car parking” problems are caused by accidents.

If my idea were successful it could surprise you how much highways would flow without so many traffic hold ups.

Another common problem is the use of mobile phones when driving. Present penalties don’t seem to be having the desired result.

How about if the phone was confiscated for a week and a payment of, say, $500 to retrieve it?

This would be a great inconvenience and make drivers consider the consequences.

I am sure when this information was made public the use of phones while driving would drop.

I hope I have made some worthwhile suggestions which may need a little bit of touching up.

Overall I believe we have to take action as our present situation is not good and all efforts in the past have done very little to reduce our road toll. BRUCE WOODS, PARADISE WATERS

I WOULD like to commend the builder refurbishing the amenities at John Laws Park at Burleigh Heads.

Amid the whining and whinging from those who felt they had been inconveniently affected by the work and didn’t have the foresight to see the end result, at all times the builder and his men were friendly, considerate and affable while working hard to complete the job.

Well done. JACK JACKSON, BURLEIGH

MUST agree with ALP’s Georgi Leader letter (GCB, 17/11) regarding

a risky option of a Nicholls/One Nation coalition, if his promises to make Queensland a better place to live in is anything to go by.

In the last LNP Government we had under Campbell Newman he was a terrible Treasurer and now he admits they made mistakes, why then should we trust him this time?

Leopards never change their spots and neither will he.

Why is that all LNP governments need the help of another minor party to help them govern our country and states alike?

The answer is very simple – they just don’t have the entire support on their own without the likes of One Nation.

Just wait and see in a few days if the voters are stupid enough to vote Nicholls in or LNP. JAMES P. MCGUIRE, SURFERS PARADISE

NEXT Saturday I will have had the right to vote in a State Election for the 53rd year.

On a recent ABC political program they discussed the Australian public’s obsession with voting for the two main political parties.

The tone of the discussion was, is it now time for us to look at alternate parties or a combination of these? Could they do any better?

Prior to moving to the Gold

Coast we lived in country Queensland and for nine years we had an independent member.

The consensus was this was a period of stability in our district. Now they are back to the two party candidates and times are shaken. GREG DARLINGTON, SOUTHPORT

MEDIA is revealing that in the past three years Annastacia has created jobs for an extra 3200 public servants, at a cost to taxpayers of over $2 million per annum.

How many of these recruits have been given genuine daily duties, and how many are phantoms told to stay out of sight and instructed not to discuss this, especially with the media.

Thank God for the media who protect the public from political deceit and misrepresentation. KEN WADE, TWEED HEADS

TO ADD to recent comments regarding the M1 carpark, the thousands and thousands of houses and shops being built between the Gold Coast and Brisbane are bringing in millions of dollars in rates and taxes for GCCC and state and federal governments yet no apparent efforts are being made to upgrade the infrastructure accordingly.
