Mostert wants champagne moment

- CONNOR O’BRIEN

DESPITE remaining a mathematical chance in the race for the Supercars title, Chaz Mostert’s sole focus this weekend is on netting champagne and trophies for his Ford squad.

Mostert is fourth in the standings, 264 points behind fellow Gold Coaster Jamie Whincup with a maximum of 300 available at Newcastle.

He is guaranteed to improve on his career-best season ranking of seventh (2014 and 2016) but will only stand a chance of being crowned champion if both Whincup and second-placed Scott McLaughlin endure nightmare weekends.

“I just want to go and get some more champagne and trophies for the guys,” the 25year-old Mostert said of his desire to stand on the podium at Newcastle.

“The championship is what it is. For me it is just about going out and having some fun at a new track and get some champagne.”
