HAYNE ON A PLANE?

TITANS TALK TOUGH

- EMMA GREENWOOD

GARTH Brennan has conceded speculation about Jarryd Hayne’s departure could be on the mark but says he won’t be wasting energy worrying about the star fullback’s future at the Titans.

The new Titans coach has not attempted to contact Hayne since news broke he could collect $180,000 of his rich contract while on World Cup duty and then his scheduled post-tournament break, before declaring to the club he would not return.

But he was willing to discuss the club’s fullback options in a sign he believes growing speculation about Hayne’s desire to leave the Gold Coast could be on the mark.

Brennan conceded News Corp journalist Phil Rothfield – who broke the story about Hayne’s possible departure in the Gold Coast Bulletin’s sister publication, the Daily Telegraph – was rarely wrong.

“I think it’s just media speculation at the moment (but) one thing I will say about Phil Rothfield is that he’s a very experienced and wellrespected journalist and usually when Phil comes out with something like that, he’s usually got pretty good mail,” Brennan said.

“But until I speak to Jarryd or his management or the club speak to us, I’ve just got to expect that Jarryd’s going to be here after the New Year ready to rip in for the Gold Coast Titans for 2018.

“I am excited if that happens.

“If Jarryd has some circumstances where he needs to be somewhere else, then I’ll deal with it when I have to.

“But at the moment, I’m not worrying about something that may or may not be happening.”
