Tears for a loving mum

- HANNAH SBEGHEN hannah.sbeghen@news.com.au

IT was more than 20 years ago Kym Cobby walked down the aisle at St Peter’s Anglican Church at Southport.

Yesterday loved ones gathered at the same church for a much sadder occasion.

In the presence of more than 100 family and friends the 51-year-old, who was allegedly brutally murdered by her estranged husband, was farewelled in an emotional service.

The Worongary motherof-three was remembered as a fun-loving, energetic woman who would do anything for her children.

Just days before White Ribbon Day, a national day for victims of domestic violence, Kym’s life was celebrated with no mention of her horrible death.

To the sad tunes of Eric Clapton’s Tears in Heaven and Wiz Khalifa’s See You Again, photos were projected on the wall, including wedding photos and snaps happy family occasions.

Father Harry Reuss said Kym was a “lovely” woman, who probably had no idea how many friends and loved ones she had.

Ms Cobby’s children Joel, Luke and Ella huddled together, with the pain etched on 13-year-old Ella’s face.

Eldest son, Joel, wore dark glasses as he read his eulogy, telling mourners he never thought he would be giving one and to forgive him, as it was his first time.

The 23-year-old said his mum always made him laugh, saying, even when of they “fought like cats and dogs, they loved each other very much and never needed words”.

“She loved her garden, even if she wasn’t great at keeping it ... she would always give everything a go,” he said, fighting back tears.

“My little sister is a big reminder of mum, she looks just like her and they were the best of friends, who would stay up all night giggling together. No one knew mum better than Ella did.

“Mum has this saying, that it is always the good ones that go early, and I guess that's true.”

At the conclusion, Ella walked ahead of the casket with a portrait of her mother, while her brothers acted as pallbearers. Family members held a private wake in Kym’s honour.

Ms Cobby’s estranged husband, Andrew Cobby, has been charged with one count of murder and is expected to reappear in Southport Magistrates Court on December 7.
