New Supercars squad set to line up at Coast

- – CONNOR O’BRIEN

THE Gold Coast is set to have another team on the Supercars grid in 2018 in what is expected to be a huge boost for the sport in the region.

Yatala-based Matt Stone Racing is widely expected to be approved to join the main series as the picture becomes clearer for how the field will line up in the competition next year.

Matt Stone is the son of Supercars hall of famer Jim Stone, who was a key figure in the now defunct championship-winning Stone Brothers

Racing outfit.

MSR are shortly anticipated to secure a Racing Entitlements Contract from retiring stalwart Jason Bright to book their spot as one of 26 competing cars.

Should their bid be successful, rookie driver Todd Hazelwood is believed to be most likely to jump behind the wheel.

Currently driving for MSR in the Dunlop Series, Hazelwood yesterday impressively clinched the second-tier title in Newcastle.

There are currently two Gold Coast teams in Supercars: DJR Team Penske at Stapylton and Tekno Autosports at Yatala.
