ACTING Mayor Donna Gates will issue an invitation to Prince Harry and new fiancée Meghan Markle to honeymoon on the Gold Coast following their wedding early next year.

The new royal couple announced their engagement on Monday night and have already received a flood of wellwishes.

Gold Coast city leaders say they would roll out the red carpet for the royal couple should they choose to honeymoon here following their wedding, which is expected to take place on a date between March and May next year.

Cr Gates will draft an invitation after consulting yesterday with Mayor Tom Tate, a passionate monarchist.

Cr Gates said the engagement was “fantastic news”.

“I’m inviting them to the Gold Coast for their honeymoon as we have everything the newlywed royals would want,” she said.

“Meghan can be pampered at the Star’s six-star accommodation while Harry can go sailing off the Seaway.

“I’ll then ensure they get to experience the whale migration on the humpback highway and sample some of the Gold Coast’s best craft beers and our famous food trucks spread right along the coastline.”

Cr Gates said the invitation would be dispatched to Clarence House in London later this week.

“Realistically, they only need to come to the Gold Coast as we are the epicentre of Australia,” she said.

“I’ll wait for the call and then start organising everything.’’

The Gold Coast is already preparing for royal visitors next year when Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall visit to open the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

His brother, Prince Edward, the Earl of Wessex, is also expected to attend in his position as vice-patron of the Commonwealth Games Federation.

Gold Coast Tourism welcomed news of the invitation and has thrown its weight behind the push, with Chief Executive Martin Winter saying the city was the “perfect location” for a royal honeymoon.

“Every soft-hearted person in the world is so happy about this announcement and I see no reason why they couldn’t schedule their honeymoon around the Commonwealth Games when the whole family will be in town,” Mr Winter said. “We could give them a royal welcome they would never forget.” GOLD COAST, AUSTRALIA
