Rescues herald summer

- KATE PARASKEVOS

IT was a busy day yesterday on Gold Coast beaches with eight rescues at Tallebudgera and Currumbin and a shark sighting at Tweed.

A kayaker was rescued after he was stuck in a current at the river mouth at Tallebudgera Creek yesterday morning.

Five males and two females were also rescued at Currumbin and Tallebudgera, including an 11-year-old boy and a 45-year old man who found themselves in trouble while swimming outside the flags on an outgoing tide. They were dragged out from shore before surf lifesavers brought them back safely.

There was also a confirmed shark sighting at the mouth of the Tweed River.

A surf lifesaving spokesman said sharks making their way into river systems depended on a few factors.

“It really depends on the water clarity and if there is an outgoing tide where you can see more fish action,” he said.

He said the number of rescues over the weekend were also an indication summer had arrived.
