GOLD COAST WRAP WITH UBET’S NICOLE THOMAS

-

WINNERS She Is Fierce (Race 2)

She Is Fierce received not one iota of support from the punters and drifted from $10 to $21. I’m not sure why because she sat three wide without cover for the entire race, came widest around the turn and still mowed them down. An outstanding win.

Jadentom (Race 6)

Jadentom’s win was spectacular and it was the biggest betting plunge of the day (that came off). He opened at $2.90 and finished $1.60. There were no scratchings either, so that’s a “good old-fashioned go”. He unexpectedly missed the kick, stealthily kept improving his position and let down beautifully after the turn to win well.

LoSERS

Verily (Race 2)

The money said Verily was going to perform better than she did at her fourth race start. The four-year-old mare shortened from $6.50 in to $4.60. After settling midfield on the rail, she found trouble at the 600m, got shuffled back and had no room in the straight. She was gently eased to the line in 11th place. Diamonds Are (Race 8) It was bitterly disappointing for Diamond Are punters in the last, with one $3400 bet placed at $1.60. The Michael Costa-trained gelding was backed to the exclusion of all others, opening at $3 and starting odds-on. He was dragged back to last in a slowly run race and couldn’t get a run at the top of the straight. Although he finished with a wet sail, he could only manage to run into fourth but the pace was against him, so don’t discard.

NEXT TIME

Laser Sight (Race 4) It was an excellent run by Laser Sight considering the five-yearold was wide for the trip. Punters just kept backing him too, all the way from $10 in to $4.80. He couldn’t obtain cover early so took off before the turn and had every right to weaken but stuck on well to finish fourth.

Sonic Bloom (Race 1)

The wide gate didn’t deter Sonic Bloom punters. The David Fletcher-trained four-year-old went up at $2.80 and was backed in to $2.35. Although he didn’t win, it was still a super effort to come second. He found himself wide early, so pushed forward and looked to be ridden along the whole way. I’m not sure how he still almost ran down the leader who had a cushier run.
