Aussies aiming high

- MATT WINDLEY

SOCCEROOS stars believe they are capable of defying the rankings and fight their way out of a tricky FIFA World Cup group.

Midfielder Jackson Irvine said Australian players would now turn their attention to club football to make sure they booked their individual tickets to Russia.

Australia was drawn alongside heavyweights France and top-12 nations Peru and Denmark.

Despite the Socceroos appearing to have their work cut out for them, Irvine, Bailey Wright and Jimmy Jeggo were all confident the team could advance.

Hull City’s Irvine said there was a sense of relief at knowing who they would be playing.

“The level of international football is as strong as it’s ever been,” Irvine said.

“The games will all be difficult in their own right, but if we approach them with our positive mentality then we are capable of putting in performances capable of beating top nations.

‘‘In saying that, anything less than our maximum levels and we will find it very tough. But even with a change of manager, we will maintain our belief and confidence in the way we play.

“The full focus for now has to be on domestic football.

‘‘We’ve got to be playing and impressing a new manager to make sure of a place on that plane to Russia.”

Bristol City captain Wright said the fact that the first game against France was in Kazan – where the Socceroos will be based – was an unexpected bonus.

“Suddenly it all feels more real now that we know who we face,” Wright said. “I’m looking forward to all the games and especially France.

‘‘They’re a world-class team with some world-class players. But that’s the type of team we want to play against.

‘‘It’ll be where our base is in Kazan, which is good too.

“We are ready to back ourselves against anyone. “Can’t wait for it now.” Former Melbourne Victory midfielder Jeggo said the team should not be daunted by the draw.

“It’s definitely a good draw for us,” Jeggo said. “Going to the World Cup you want to challenge yourself.”
