DRAW HAS AUSSIES DESPERATE FOR WINS
AUSTRALIA’S Commonwealth Games hopes have hit a hurdle after they were held to a 2-2 draw by Germany in the second match of their Hockey World League Final campaign in Bhubaneswar.
The Kookaburras trailed 1-0 at the break after Marco Miltkau struck for Germany, but they hit back to take the lead in the final quarter thanks to goals from Blake Govers and Aaron Kleinschmidt.
However, Germany equalised from a 58th-minute penalty corner through their captain Martin Haner to deny Australia the win.
Man of the Match Jake Whetton, who set up Australia’s second goal, said: “We improved from yesterday.
“Germany are an outstanding team. We knew that. They put it to us in the first half and I thought we worked really well to get back into the game.
“It’s disappointing to come away with the draw. We’re getting into this tournament. It’s a big tournament for us and we’re really looking forward to moving forward now.”
The Kookaburras, who also drew their opening match in Pool B against India, are in action against England tonight.
