No sign of fishermen under wreck

FOUR fishermen who disappeared when their trawler sank off central Queensland are not underneath the boat, a salvage crew has discovered.

Police held slim hopes of recovering the men’s bodies from underneath the MV Di- anne, but a large-scale operation to lift the boat to the surface has found no trace of them.

Ruben McDornan, 32, was the only crew member to survive when the trawler sank in stormy seas last month.

Police divers later recovered the bodies of skipper Ben Leahy, 45, and Adam Hoffman, 30, from inside the wreck.

Four others, Gold Coast cinematographer Chris Sammut, 34, Eli Tonks, 39, Adam Bidner, 33, and Zach Feeney, 28, were not inside the vessel, and a massive air and sea search found no trace of them in the days after the trawler sank.

Inspector Darren Somerville said the salvage company was yesterday able to roll the Dianne on to its side.

Further rigging will be undertaken to raise the trawler to the surface.

From there, it will be towed to a marina where Maritime Safety Queensland will assist police in investigating why it sank.
