Fradd on top of world with win

-

GOLD Coast-based rider Robbie Fradd has won an International Jockeys Challenge in Mauritius representing his native South Africa.

Fradd and fellow Gold Coast jockey Jeff Lloyd, who also represented South Africa, competed against riders from around the world over the weekend at the Indian Ocean island nation.

Fradd was in sixth place after Saturday’s meeting but three winners on Sunday elevated him to the top of the table.

He finished with 41 points with Brazil’s Elione Chaves runner-up on 39. English jockey Hayley Turner, who finished sixth, became the first woman to ride a winner in Mauritius.

The series win capped a big week for Fradd, who turned 53 yesterday.

That celebration came after he rode five outright winners and a dead-heat for first at the Gold Coast metropolitan meeting last Wednesday.

His Gold Coast haul took him to 35½ winners in the Queensland metropolitan jockeys premiership, just 1½ behind Lloyd.

Fradd will ride for the All Stars team in the UBET Origin jockeys series in Queensland this weekend.

The series has been expanded to seven teams in a revamped format this year.

Jim Byrne and Matt McGillivray will ride for Queensland.
