Stewart after Quade role

-

JASON Gilmore has been named Junior Wallabies coach for 2018 but trump Hamish Stewart is likely to be missing as Queensland Reds’ replacement for Quade Cooper.

Gold Coaster Stewart, 19, was a standout at flyhalf for the Aussie Under-20s in Georgia this year and is eligible for next year’s tournament in France.

News that Cooper is not top choice for No.10 at the Reds means new coach Brad Thorn rates Stewart above him.

Gilmore, as Reds Academy coach, relishes the role as Under-20s head coach under the rebranded Junior Wallabies banner after being an assistant coach in 2010 and 2016.

“Pushing young guys along the pathways and Under-20s is integral in developing players for Super Rugby, Aussie Sevens and the Wallabies,” Gilmore said. “I definitely feel equipped after two stints as an assistant and knowing the style you need as well as the resilient footballers who can handle four-day turnarounds.”

Prop Josh Nasser, son of former Wallaby Brendan, will be part of this week’s Under-20s camp in Canberra.
