GOLF YOUNG GUN JOINS JAPANESE TOUR

- JIM TUCKER

CAMERON Smith is confident he can force a spot in the world top 50 to book a second shot at the Masters at Augusta now he’s solved the riddle of the Joe Kirkwood Cup.

Winning the Australian PGA at Royal Pines last Sunday is one thing, working out the capacity of the trophy during celebrations is the domain of champions.

“It’s still sinking in ... you don’t expect to see the trophy just sitting there on the kitchen table at home,” Smith said.

“It holds seven XXXX Golds so we had a few quiet celebratory drinks out of it.”

The victory catapulted him 25 positions to a career-best No.61 in the world which makes it 80 spots in all during his hot two-month run through Malaysia (5th), Korea (3rd), the Australian Open (4th) and the PGA.

“It’d be nice to get inside the top 50 for a Masters start in April,” said Smith, who made his Masters debut last year. “If I get off to a decent enough start with my two events in Hawaii next month plus the (US) west coast swing at two of my favourite courses at Torrey Pines and Riviera I should be able to tick that off.”
