been running his business from Cavill Ave for 28 years and said in the past four years he has had to deal with schoolies on scooters.

“I don’t understand why so many are allowed scooters at once in one place. It makes me uncomfortable knowing a teenager who probably has no experience in riding a scooter is now driving on footpaths.

“Where is the logic in letting teenagers ride up and down the mall? The other thing is that most of them don’t have helmets.”

According to Transport and Main Roads (TMR), petrol scooters must be registered and can only be ridden on the road by a licensed rider wearing a helmet.

There are four scooter rental shops on Orchid Ave including Scooter Hire, Happy Hire, Moped City, eScoot Hire, Hire For Fun and Fun 4 Hire. All declined to comment.

Their customers only require ID, to be over 17 and proof they are not under the influence of alcohol.

“We have been working with Gold Coast City Council, police and the Office of Fair Trading to advise businesses of their obligations renting legal vehicles,” a TMR spokesperson said.

TMR said police were responsible for enforcing the road rules. “Electric bicycles and scooters are classed as ‘bicycles’.”
