WORK CRACKS ON AT WINNING RATE OF KNOTS

- PETER BEATTIE

THERE is not a day that goes by when I am not amazed at how quickly things move in Commonwealth Games Land.

It seems like just weeks ago we were poring over pencil drawings for how the Commonwealth Games Village will look in Games mode but as you’ll read on these pages, work is well under way on installing the furniture, fixtures and other equipment needed to make it a true “home away from home” for our 6600 athletes and team officials.

In typical GOLDOC style, the move is well on schedule.

You may have also seen some activity at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre (the Optus Aquatic Centre at Games time) in recent days as work begins on transforming the wonderful facility into a 12,000-seat temporary stadium.

Seeing those works and those going on at Carrara Stadium means GC2018 is becoming very real.

Indeed, we are not at all far from one of the greatest times of our lives.

Tickets are selling extremely well with almost a million sold for the first Commonwealth Games ever to be staged in a regional city.

Some 200,000 are still available across a wide variety of sports on a firstcome, first-served basis after 90,000 were snapped up in the first few days of tickets going on general sale only 10 days ago.

That’s all very good news ahead of this week’s eighth and final visit by the Commonwealth Games

Federation Coordination Commission (CoCom), which gets under way today and runs until Friday.

A warm welcome back to the Gold Coast to CGF president Louise Martin, vice-president and CoCom chair Bruce Robertson, chief executive David Grevemberg and the commission members.

I know they’ll be very impressed, not only with GOLDOC’s preparations, but the excitement and anticipation that continues to build in our city.
