Skipper needed for Dolphins – again

- CONNOR O’BRIEN connor.obrien@news.com.au

GOLD Coast are set to field their fourth captain of the Queensland Premier Cricket season before Christmas.

Leg-spinning veteran Daniel Doran is again planning to sit out the T20 swing this summer to help the Dolphins’ pro- mote rising talent through the action-packed format.

Doran has filled in as captain in recent matches in the absence of regular skippers Michael Neser (Queensland duties) and Nick Stevens (injury).

But Doran’s stance plus Stevens being expected to return in January means a new leader will get the nod for the T20 double-header at Bill Pippen Oval on December 17.

“Dan probably doesn’t see much point in him playing in that. It gives some young guys a go to show their skills,” coach Damian Wallis said.

A couple of options are understood to be in the mix to take the reins as stand-in skipper, with a cagey Wallis saying “I’ve got a bit of a hunch who it might be”.

The Dolphins have a busy fortnight coming up with a Saturday-Sunday two-day match this weekend against Sandgate-Redcliffe and three limited-overs games the following weekend before a twoweek break.
