Sister’s heartbreak over site tragedy

THE family of David James Wright, killed in an accident at a Yatala work site, say they are devastated by the death of a young man “just starting to experience life”.

The 22-year-old was in the basket of a cherry picker at the site on Tuesday morning when it counterbalanced, wedging him between a steel frame and the machine. He died instantly.

His sister Sharely Bird told the Bulletin: “He had just started making a life for himself, he was doing great financially and he had a New Zealand trip planned to see the snow again. It was his big goal next year.

“In the past six months he had done so much to make the family so proud of him. We are devastated.”

Ms Bird said her brother had a genuine heart. “He always appreciated when people helped him out and he would do the same,” she said.

Ms Bird told her Facebook followers: “(You were) 22, you didn’t even have a chance to make all the mistakes in life. You were only just starting to experience life.

“We were always close, we had been through so much together.

“I keep hoping you are going to show up, that this is another one of your stupid jokes. Every moment that passes it becomes more and more real that I’m never going to see your stupid face again.

“You weren’t meant to leave me yet, you weren’t meant to go. You were wanting to see the snow again, you finally wanted to stand on your own two feet and you’ll never get a chance. I will miss you forever.”

Worksites in Brisbane and the Gold Coast paid tribute to Mr Wright yesterday, stopping for a minute’s silence.

The Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) were unable to be contacted for comment. Workplace Health and Safety are investigating.
