RILEY RUNS AWAY WITH AWARD

- AMANDA ROBBEMOND

RILEY Day was never really interested in sports – until she began to run.

Last week, the 17-year-old won the national Junior Sports Star gong at the Local Sports Stars awards, beating out a heavy field of competition.

“I was very excited, I didn’t expect to win,” Ms Day said of her latest accolade. “I was up against very tough competition so when they rang I was so surprised and honoured.”

Ms Day has competed across Australia and this year competed in London at the World Championships, where she placed 7th in her heat for the 200m sprint.

The Beaudesert resident said she would go as far as she could with sprinting and hoped to make it one day to the Olympics and Commonwealth Games.

“I will go as far as I can go with it, journey day by day,” she said.

Leukie Smith and Jess Scott of the Griffith University Surfers Paradise Rowing Under 19s Women’s Pair won the Junior Sports Star Team award.
