BROOKE SETS FISH EXAMPLE FOR GIRLS

-

THERE is no shortage here on the Gold Coast of girls in bikinis but we are more accustomed to seeing them on the beach, not fighting marlin and mahi mahi offshore.

After spending her early years as a motor racing enthusiast but growing frustrated at the expense of the sport, Brooke Frecklington was introduced five years ago into fishing via her husband and father and immediately fell in love with it, so much so that she decided she wanted to earn a living from her new passion.

After a friend told her about the benefits of social media she decided to start her own account and over the past couple of years has become one of the country’s most popular fishermen to follow on Instagram and Youtube.

She once harboured a dream of creating and running her own fishing television show but now believes social media is the future and is generating income via her growing following.

Brooke regularly posts images of the fish that she is catching here on the Gold Coast and although she admits about 95 per cent of her followers are males she is using her platform to try and entice more girls into fishing.

Most dads will teach their sons the basics of fishing but sometimes assume their daughters won’t be interested – and Brooke believes this is a mistake.

She is encouraging Gold Coast girls to get out on the water and feel the excitement of catching a marlin and they will be hooked like she is.

She says slowly she is starting to see more girls get into fishing but for the most part she fishes with the boys.

Most of her fishing nowadays is using micro jigs in 20-80m of water off the coast and she has racked up some very impressive catches.

Over summer she has the goal of catching one of the many small black marlin that have just turned up off the Gold Coast.

She has only caught the one so far and that was a few years ago and it was caught and released without too much of a fight so she is hoping for a longer battle this Christmas.
