STARS PUTTING NETBALL FIRE INTO NEXT GENERATION OF TALENT

- TOM BOSWELL tom.boswell@news.com.au

THE Queensland Firebirds are increasing their presence on the Coast as the Super Netball franchise looks to tap into an increasing talent pool.

The Firebirds are holding camps at Coomera Anglican College hoping to foster the city’s growing junior talent.

Gold Coast product and Firebirds player Gretel Tippett said the number of camps run by the club had increased from one a year to five in her four years with the team.

It is offseason for young netballers on the Coast but more than 100 turned up to the camp yesterday.

“I don’t think we have ever had these numbers before – it’s really exciting,” Tippett said.

“To see it now in the netball offseason is huge.

“It was great to get down and work with the future netball superstars of our sport.

“Giving back to the grassroots community is a big part of why I play.

“I can relate because I was a Gold Coast girl who absolutely loved every kind of sport growing up.

“A lot of girls play on the Gold Coast and there is a lot of talent down here so the more camps you can do and the more we can touch base down here then the better it is for the Firebirds and the sport.”
