PERFECT HOLIDAY SPOT WHEN THE KIDS DRIVE YOU UP THE WALL

- JEREMY PIERCE

IT IS as much a part of a Queensland summer as the Gabba Test or Bowen mangoes.

For generations, Queensland children have headed to the Gold Coast Recreation Centre, at Palm Beach, for school holiday fun and if you ask Chloe Ward she is having a wall.

The centre’s 10m indoor rock climbing wall, called “the rock face”, has already proved a hit with children and is expected to receive a solid workout over the next two months during the summer holidays.

About 500 children visited the centre during the September school holidays.

It is a figure that could be tripled by the end of January.

There are no accurate records for the number of Queensland children who have visited the centre since it opened 50 years ago.

Chloe and her brother Jake, 10, had so much fun trying to scale the rock face at the centre they are already planning a return visit.

Other activities at the Gold Coast centre include abseiling, a high ropes course, which allows visitors to climb over obstacles 10m off the ground, and a giant swing on which participants are hauled 20m into the air.

Activities even include canoe and kayak tours of the nearby Tallebudgera Creek waterways.
