THAT’S A WRAP: SUSHI FUSION A HIT

- KATE PARASKEVOS kate.paraskevos@news.com.au

WRESTLING with chopsticks while your sushi falls apart is a common reality of Japanese dining – but a new fusion food has solved the dilemma.

Not quite traditional Japanese, not quite Mexican, sushi burritos incorporate traditional ingredients such as rice, meats and veggies all wrapped up in a tortilla.

The burritos have made their way onto the menu at Suki, which has opened its first Gold Coast operation at The Promenade at Robina after the success of its Brisbane locations.

Suki’s Kim Toovey said the trend of fusion food mash-ups was growing – and the quirkier the better.

“They (sushi burritos) are great because they are all wrapped up in tortillas or seaweed wraps so you don’t have to deal with the messiness that comes with some traditional dishes,” he said.

“Fusion foods are a real trend at the moment and eateries are trying to find that point of difference and be creative.”

Suki also boasts buildyour-own poke bowls with Mr Toovey saying the colourful dishes are very “Instagram worthy”.

“I think the popularity with the poke bowls is that you can choose the ingredients yourself so you can order exactly what you like, not just off a set menu.”

“They are fresh and colourful, vibrant and really fun.”

Mr Toovey said he was signing a lease deal to open a second Gold Coast restaurant at another major shopping centre in February.
