HE can’t read sheet music, but musician Chris Black is just days away from finding out if he’s the winner of an international music competition.

After beating out hundreds of other competitors, the 25year-old is in the top five of Megastar, a competition overseen by US singer Usher.

“I taught myself piano the last two years,” he said, adding he had used YouTube tutorials to learn.

“I can’t read music, I learn by ear.”

But the lack of professional lessons didn’t stop Mr Black from working his way into the competition and having thousands of fans vote him into the top five of the talent search over a number of weeks.

Tomorrow, the Robina local will fly to Los Angeles to meet Usher before the results are revealed on Friday night.

Mr Black said his friends and family gave him a helpful push into the industry after he “discovered” he could sing at age 16.

“I kept doing it for fun and had good feedback,” he said.

“When I realised it was something I was in love with, I wanted to pursue it no matter what.”

Mr Black said he battled with being shy, but pushed himself to “bite the bullet” and perform.

He said he was using social media as a platform to boost himself and hoped to get scouted.

The Megastar finale will be livestreamed via the Megastar app.
