Wigg’s pain tip

- TOM BOSWELL tom.boswell@news.com.au

SUNS ruckman Jarrod Witts has urged injured recruit Harrison Wigg to use his time away from training as an opportunity to work on other key areas of his game.

Wigg had his preseason campaign brought to an early end on Monday when he fractured his foot during a drill.

Witts can relate to the 21year-old’s frustration. The 25year-old’s 2017 season was ended after a shoulder injury in Round 19 against Richmond while a unique hand injury interrupted preseason and nearly cost him a start in Round 1.

Witts split the webbing of his hand in the club’s opening JLT Community Series game against Brisbane.

The 208cm talent – who has had multiple shoulder reconstructions – said the key to Wigg bouncing back was to ensure he returned even better.

“It is obviously not ideal for him but it gives him a chance to work on other things like his upper body strength,” he said.

“You can get better in other areas. It is frustrating and you realise how much you miss it when you are on the sidelines.

“I have gone through a bit of it and I guess it gave me an opportunity to work on other things. It is the same for him.

“He is staying with one of the boys and they said he is in pretty good spirits.”

Witts met teammates Tom Nicholls and Jarryd Lyons at the club’s training and administration base at Carrara yesterday where the three clubs sponsored by Huewei – the Suns (AFL), Canberra Raiders (NRL) and Wellington Phoenix (A-League) – came together for a “battle of the codes”.

The clubs competed in a range of games with three fans as part of an experience won through a charity auction that has raised $2493 for the Gold Coast Community Fund’s White Christmas Appeal.
