Lights go out on United
GOLD Coast United FC’s first official off-season hitout has had to be abandoned after the lights literally went out for them.
Set for their first season in the 2018 NPL Queensland soccer premiership, United sent a squad to Richlands Stadium in Brisbane on Tuesday night for a match against Brisbane Roar.
But, as players readied for kick-off, the stadium lights went out and the trial was abandoned without a ball being kicked.
United chief executive Troy Bingham said that it was unfortunate for the match to be abandoned but that it was always going to be a low-key affair anyway over two shortened halves.
“We sent a far from fullstrength senior squad up to Brisbane with some of our under-18s and under-20s,” Bingham said.
United are filling the NPLQ void left by the collapse of Gold Coast City (previously Palm Beach Sharks) two months ago. United will be joined in the NPLQ in 2019 by local Premier League champions Gold Coast Knights.
