Nair brings the X-factor for Thunder in BBL

-

HE weighs just 70kg, sports a pair of diamond earrings and has been labelled the Sydney Thunder’s “X-factor”.

Arjun Nair had a Big Bash League opening night to remember on Tuesday when his spin bowling claimed two key scalps before he hit the winning run against archrivals the Sydney Sixers.

At just 19, Nair already has Thunder skipper Shane Watson singing his praises.

“I’m so excited for Arjun Nair,’’ Watson said after the Thunder’s thrilling five-wicket victory.

“He’s someone who has that X-factor, with the ball – we saw that on Tuesday night – and with the bat as well. He’s incredibly skilful, and the way he absorbs pressure for a young man, we’re very fortunate to have him in our team.’’

Nair made a forgettable BBL debut 12 months ago, and that shocking one over he bowled crossed his mind on Tuesday night when his first ball – a full toss – was launched for a six.

He composed himself and went on to take the wicket of Sixers skipper Moises Henriques two balls later, relaxed and went about playing the kind of cricket that has earned him a few raps.

“It’s nice to hear (the raps), but for me it’s about producing results,” Nair said.

“You can have all the hype and talent, but if you don’t produce that will all drop away.

“I wanted to prove I am capable at this level. I could have done better, but it was a good start for me and the team.’’

Nair finished with 2-29, and his combination with fellow tweaker Fawad Ahmed (2-11) put a stranglehold on the Sixers during the middle overs of their innings.

The spin twins will play a big part in the Thunder’s hopes of bagging a second win in Adelaide tomorrow night.
