Spartans on new ground

-

THE Gold Coast’s youngest Australian football junior club the Mudgeeraba Spartans will have a brand new field to play on in the Gold Coast competition next year.

The club has struck a deal with Somerset College to play home games at Wyangan Oval on a field that is currently being turfed in preparation.

Now the Spartans are chasing youngsters to fill their teams for the 2018 GCJAFL premierships.

“We’ve been going for three years and playing our games on the rugby union ground at Somerset,” Spartans official Dan Nimmo said.

“But now we’ve got a fullsize Aussie rules ground.”

Somerset College sports facilities manager Damian Flint said two rugby fields will be expanded to facilitate the Spartans’ program.

He said turf being laid to increase the size of the playing area should be ready to go by January. The GCJAFL season will not kick off until after the Commonwealth Games.
