Haas, Brimson in young state squad

- PAUL MALONE

TWO teenage Broncos props have made Queensland’s Emerging Origin squad in the same week that clubmate Payne Haas was included in the equivalent NSW rugby league star-search.

Haas and Patrick Carrigan, a prop with a high workrate, were the props in the NRL under-20 team of the year. Carrigan and Broncos prop Thomas Flegler, who had operations on both shoulders this year, were named in the Queensland Emerging squad yesterday.

Seven Broncos and seven Cowboys were selected for the camp based at the Queensland Academy of Sport, along with sole Titans representative, promising half A.J. Brimson.

The Queensland squad also includes Tristan Sailor, the son of former Queensland winger Wendell Sailor.

Tristan played for St George Illawarra this year.

Queensland under-20 coach Justin Hodges will take charge of the players selected for the Emerging Maroons camp in Brisbane from January 18-21.

Haas and established Broncos first-grader Tevita Pengai Jr were named on Tuesday in coach Brad Fittler’s first NSW Emerging squad.

Ten members of the Hodges-coached Queensland under-20 team that lost a tight match to NSW this year are in the Queensland squad.

Sailor scored a try in that match.
