-

A MAN has died in a tragic Christmas Day drowning incident.

The man was swimming in the water at Duranbah beach with up to seven others when they started drifting out to sea just before 4pm on Monday.

Queensland surf life savers raced out to the group on jetskis and were able to get everyone to shore however one man was unable to be revived.

Two other swimmers have been taken to hospital in a stable condition.

QAS officer Terry Savage said surf life savers were actually completing an unrelated rescue when they were alerted to the group of about seven swimmers in trouble. “They’ve actually got seven people out of the water,” he said.

“Unfortunately it happens all too easy, but (the beach) was patrolled and surf life savers acted very swiftly,” he said.
