Tourist‘s attack on police car

-

A CANADIAN tourist will face a Sydney court after allegedly diving into the front windscreen of a police car and assaulting officers until he was Tasered in Byron Bay on Christmas night.

The 23-year-old man was yesterday granted bail in the Tweed Heads Local Court after being charged with assaulting and resisting police and malicious damage.

Police were called to Byron Bay Lighthouse about 11pm Monday after reports the man was threatening to self-harm.

As the officers arrived at the car park, the man allegedly ran at the police car and launched himself headfirst into the windscreen, causing it to shatter. Police were still in the vehicle at the time.

The man then allegedly jumped on the bonnet and started kicking the windscreen before punching and head-butting the front passenger’s window.

He then opened the door to the police car and was Tasered by police before jumping up and punching an officer.

The man will appear in Downing Centre Local Court on January 15 after being granted conditional bail.
