Greens ready to continue fight for progressive nation

- SARAH HANSON-YOUNG, GREENS SENATOR

IT’S been a long year in politics. There have been some resounding wins like the passing marriage equality after a long campaign.

We’ve chased BP and Chevron out of the Great Australian Bight, and we’re fighting hard for environmental flows for the River Murray after what has been a terrible year for the Murray Darling Basin.

And while the Greens have had their challenges in 2017, welcoming two passionate, motivated Senators in Jordon SteeleJohn and Andrew Bartlett into the Parliament has shown how strong our Greens team is.

We’re a party of ideas on the up, and every year we renew the fight to give Australia the progressive, forward-thinking government it deserves.

And while we don’t know what 2018 holds in politics, if it’s anything like this year, we will keep standing up to the Liberal Government against widening the divide between the haves and have-nots, and dragging the country to the right in an attempt to peel back voters from Pauline Hanson’s One Nation.

I’m energised to work for you against this Government’s cruelty to refugees, for tackling dangerous global warming, future-proofing our energy grid and fighting for a fair go for our university and TAFE students, who shouldn’t get saddled with huge debts just for wanting to improve their career prospects.

I want to push for cuts to childcare to be reversed, and funding improved so we can guarantee two days of care for families who need it.

I am excited that, with a bit of hard work from the progressive side of politics, by 2025 we will live in a world where electricity is affordable, reliable and clean, where education is seen as an investment, not a burden. Giving big corporates $65 billion in tax cuts is a bad choice, and one we don’t need to make.

It’s not going to do anything to help families, students and young people get ahead – trickle-down economics simply doesn’t work.

Use this as a time to reflect on what change you would like to see from Canberra next year – I want to hear from you.

What do you want me to fight for? Send me an email at senator. hanson-young@aph.gov.au with your thoughts.
