Timely test for rising mare

- RAY THOMAS

SEDANZER, Sydney’s form mare of the summer, will need to demonstrate her new-found versatility to continue her winning momentum in the Group 3 $150,000 Belle of the Turf Stakes (1600m) at Gosford today.

Trainer Adrian Bott conceded Sedanzer’s chances of scoring her fourth win in succession rested with her ability to handle the tight Gosford track after she had scored dominant wins on spacious Rosehill (twice) and Randwick.

“With her natural racing pattern, if there is any element of doubt it is the Gosford track, because it is not ideal for her get-back style,’’ Bott said.

“I think the Sedanzer of six months ago would have struggled on a track like this, but she is a lot more mature and tractable this preparation.

“She is showing more tactical speed and is able to put herself into a position and travel nicely. It is the right time to tackle a track like Gosford.’’

Sedanzer is the $2.30 favourite to extend her winning streak and score her first win at stakes level.

The Belle of the Turf Stakes has 10 starters with Pecans ($4.80), Miss Ballantine $9) and Roseito ($23) on the quick back-up after being beaten at Warwick Farm on Saturday. Bott said the Belle of the Turf Stakes has been the target race for Sedanzer this summer.

“Sedanzer has been impressive all the way through her preparation but what has been most pleasing is the manner in which she has won her races,’’ Bott said.

“She has been so strong late in her races and puts them away very quickly. All her wins have been convincing.”
