Garfoot’s Aussie summer

- – CONNOR O’BRIEN

GOLD Coast cycling star Katrin Garfoot will spearhead the UniSA-Australia team at the 2018 Santos Women’s Tour Down Under.

Garfoot, a three-time world championship medallist, will team up with Shara Gillow, Rachel Neylan, Tiffany Cromwell, Lauren Kitchen and one further rider to be announced after the Road Nationals early next month.

“I am happy to have a spot in such a fantastic team this summer,” Garfoot said.

“These girls deserve a ride and I am proud to be a part of the team. My goal is to have a great race plan and to have a great race with the team.”

The team has been assembled from the country’s leading riders who had not already had an entry lined up for the Australian summer of cycling.

“I think it is great that all the girls get a chance to ride the UCI races this summer, especially as these races count towards the Commonwealth Games selection,” Garfoot admitted.

“I may know that I have ticked a lot of boxes for selections but for me that still does not take the pressure off.

“I still have to perform on my best standard.

“Having the opportunity to race this Australian summer season will give us all a chance to test our legs and get us back into a race routine ahead of the Commonwealth Games.”

In its third year as a UCI event, the Santos Women’s Tour Down Under will be held across January 11-14 in South Australia.
