STUCK IN THE MIDDLE
It can be hard to find a worthy midstrength, but you’ll be a popular party guest if you bring along this six pack
AT this time of the year, there’s much socialising to be done.
Watching what you drink usually means sticking with light or mid-strength beers.
While that’s being responsible, it doesn’t always leave you a lot of choice if you’re after a beer that’s low in alcohol but retains that full flavour.
Fortunately, James Squire has come forward with Mid River Pale Ale at 3.5 per cent.
It follows their release of The Constable, which at 3.8 per cent was slightly higher than most other mids, but with this latest brew you have a fair idea of just how many you can safely enjoy.
Mid River has a golden appearance with a tight white head and just a slight citrus nose — that’s typical of a pale ale, but don’t go thinking this is another fruity style summer drop.
This pale ale has just enough of a hop blend to make it interesting but there is also enough bitterness in the aftertaste to make it refreshing and a decent thirst quencher.
In that regard, it is easy to drink; not overwhelming like some pales can be.
Mid River doesn’t sit heavily in the gut and for that reason has good sessionability, making it an ideal number to take along to a party or barbecue.
It’s very versatile and would go well with fresh or lightly cooked seafood or something sizzling off the hotplate.
It also hits the spot as a brew to enjoy after work or when you’re relaxing.
It’s good to see more brewers recognising that being responsible shouldn’t come at the cost of flavour and enjoyment.
