Accident impact severs man’s leg

- AMANDA ROBBEMOND

A MAN had his leg severed after crashing his motorbike in a horror accident on an M1 off ramp yesterday.

The man, 38, came off his black Honda CBR 1000 motorbike at high speed at exit 75 in Carrara, just off the M1 at Elysium Rd.

He was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition, with his leg understood to have been severed above his knee.

Witness Dan Cunningham, of Pacific Pines, said he and his aunt were driving southbound towards Mudgeeraba just before 8am when the biker allegedly came “flying” past.

“It was pretty scary,” he said. “He zoomed past us on the driver’s side and I swear he was going 160km/h.

“We were in the middle lane and he came straight down. We would have been 100m from the exit when he went to take the off-ramp, weaving through traffic, and went straight into the barrier.”

Mr Cunningham said the bike’s front tyre appeared to lose contact with the road and when the rider tried to turn left through the exit, lost control.

“It was that scary, the poor guy flew in the air after impact,” he said.

“We’re a bit shaken up, it’s scary seeing a crash.

“To be honest, it happened so quick, in a matter of 10 seconds from the time he sped past us, I thought: ‘Gee, he’s going fast,’ then he hit the off ramp and I thought: ‘I hope he doesn’t crash’ and boom, he crashed.”

Another witness said there were eight paramedics on scene. Five ambulance crews attended, including a critical care paramedic and the High Acuity Response Unit.

The Forensic Crash Unit is continuing to investigate.

Paramedics also attended a second motorbike incident later yesterday when a bike collided with a car at Main Beach.

A 40-year-old man sustained a lower leg fracture in the incident, which happened at around 3.30pm on MacArthur Pde.

Critical care paramedics and the High Acuity Repsonse Unit responded and the man was transported to Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition.
