Sunlight could shine with kind draw

- NATHAN EXELBY

TRAINER Tony McEvoy is hoping for a “middle” barrier for Sunlight at tomorrow’s draw for the Magic Millions 2YO Classic after reporting the filly had come through her big weekend win in perfect order.

McEvoy said Sunlight had pulled up better from her run at the Coast on Saturday than her previous win at Aquis Park circuit on December 23.

“She almost ate all her dinner on Saturday and she was lovely and bright having a walk (yesterday) morning,” he said.

“When she returned to the stall she was extremely composed, lungs were fantastic and that clearly told me she’s in a beautiful place.

“We don’t need to change her now at all. She will be just going to the beach and having a light canter week.”

Ominously, McEvoy believes there’s even more in the locker for Sunlight, who is challenging Queenslander Ef Troop for favouritism.

“That race was stronger than her previous run,” he told Radio TAB’s Past the Post yesterday.

“The way she went through the motions in the race and when he put her to the sword, she ran away from the rest of the field. She was fantastic.”

McEvoy, who has stables in Melbourne and Adelaide, said one of the filly’s owners would attend the draw at Surfers Paradise tomorrow and he was hoping to be “in the middle somewhere”.

Friday night’s Canterbury winner Whiskey Shooter will take the final position in the 2YO Classic on Saturday if cotrainers Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott accept today.

The Sebring filly earned $21,970 on Friday, which pushed her just ahead of Paquirri.
