Rivals in sights as Vikings march on

- CONNOR O’BRIEN

CURRUMBIN are pushing on with their ambition to become a genuine match for “benchmark” surf life saving club Northcliffe.

The latter took the honours at the third and final Oceans 38 event at Kirra on Saturday, comfortably winning the overall pointscore.

It marked a turning of the tables after Currumbin clinched the pointscore in the opening two standalone carnivals.

Currumbin coach Michael King was happy with his club’s continued progress.

“They definitely have been doing the hard work and I think that the results are starting to show through,” he said.

“We don’t get too far ahead of ourselves. We understand that there is probably going to be a lot more competition as we get closer to state and Aussies but the more we race, the better we are going to get and that is what we are trying to do as a club.”

King said their focus had been on developing club culture as they try to gradually reel in Northcliffe.

“We have got to take small steps,” he said.

Among the stars for Currumbin were Jy Timperley, who stepped up from the under-19 division to win the open ironman. Sam Frost won the under-17 ironman while Beau Meehan, Ruby Meehan, Zach King and Hugh Munro performed well in the under-15s.
