BATON TAKES HIGH ROAD TO THE COAST

- JEREMY PIERCE

LOOKOUT.

The Queen’s Baton Relay is coming to a centre near you.

The iconic Commonwealth Games symbol was yesterday carried to the top of Point Lookout at North Stradbroke Island to continue a threemonth journey across the country.

Quandamooka traditional owner and respected Elder Aunty Rose Borey, 88, carried the baton to Headland Park for a traditional welcome with a smoking ceremony.

She said it was a special honour.

“It’s a bit overwhelming to be honest,” she said.

Local sports star Bede Durbidge (surfing) and Jemma Mi Mi (netball) were also on hand as part of the celebrations, along with Quandamooka artist Delvene Cockatoo-Collins, whose coast-inspired designs feature on the Commonwealth Games medals.

The baton will head to the Gold Coast today for the Magic Millions and an appearance atop the Glitter Strip’s tallest building before moving onwards to the Australian Open tennis tournament in Melbourne and a national tour ahead of a return to the Gold Coast for April’s Games.
