A new wave of champs

Youngsters have chance to start their ride to top at Groms Comp series

-

GOLD Coast youngsters will get the chance to shine in their own surfing backyard tomorrow as the Woolworths Surfers Groms Comp hits town.

Catering to ages from under-8s through to under-14s, the event offers a golden opportunity for juniors given it is the path taken by a string of prominent Coast surfers.

Some of the state’s youngest talent will don a rash shirt for the first time in a two-day competition tipped to deliver waves in the one to 2-foot range, with the location of the

event to be determined on the morning of the competition.

Surfing Queensland chief executive officer Adam Yates said the event will provide the

perfect kickstart to the year for many competitors.

“This event always provides a great competitive environment for some of our youngest surfers and we expect the grommets will be itching to get their 2018 campaigns underway,” he said.

After a successful series event on the Sunshine Coast in December 2017, more than 85 juniors are likely to take part.

The Groms Comp is regarded as one of the major stepping stones in the development of young Australian surfers, with the range of locations all over Australia a key part in helping juniors adapt to the various conditions.

As an added bonus, the respective winners of the under 14 boys’ and girls’ divisions from each event will receive an invite to attend a three-day Woolworths Surf Camp at the Hurley Surfing Australia High-Performance Centre.

Each entrant will also receive a T-shirt and assortment of beach products.

Previous champions include, Matt Banting, Jacob Willcox, Luke Hynd, Eli Steele, Kai Hing, Chris Zaffis, Quinn Bruce, Ellie-Jean Coffey, Macy Callaghan, Isabella Nichols, Holly Wawn and Laura Poncini.
