ISLE OF MAN WHEELS IN BIG CYCLING GUN

INTERNATIO­NAL cycling star Mark Cavendish will spearhead Isle of Man’s team for GC2018 with the 32year-old selected last week for his second Commonweal­th Games.

While just across the Irish Sea, shooting competitor David Calvert has been selected for his 11th Com- monwealth Games as part of the Northern Ireland team.

One of the greats of world cycling with 44 Grand Tour Stage wins, Cavendish will be part of the 32-strong Isle of Man team aiming to add to the three gold, two silver and six bronze medals they have won in the past.

Isle of Man will be represente­d in eight sports – athletics, badminton, cycling, gymnastics, lawn bowls, shooting, swimming and triathlon.

The country, located in the Irish Sea between Great Britain and Ireland with a population of just over 84,000, has fielded a team at every Commonweal­th Games since 1958.
