Lock Alyssa in for tough heat battle
TWEED’S Alyssa Lock faces an almighty obstacle in Macy Callaghan when the World Junior Surfing Championships resume in Kiama.
Yesterday’s lay day on day 6 (small surf) gave competitors a chance to catch their breath after a string of upsets and tight contents in the competition.
Lock will hope to add her name to that list when she faces the reigning world junior champion in Callaghan, part of a white-hot Heat 2 in Round 3 which also includes American hopeful Kirra Pinkerton.
Conditions are expected to improve today.
“Unfortunately, the swell is still tiny to and there just isn’t enough on offer to run heats,” WSL contest director Will Hayden-Smith said.
“We are expecting an increase (today) so will hope to resume competition first thing in the morning.
“We are getting to the pointy end of the event and want to make sure we allow competitors the best opportunity in the best waves we can get during the event window.
“This is the most important event of these competitors lives so we want to make the right call by them.”
Lennox Head’s Mikey McDonagh faces Liam O’Brien in Heat 9 of the men’s competition, which runs until Friday.
