Profitable start to the sales for delighted Tindall

- RYAN KEEN

JUST call him Magic Mike.

Ex-England rugby star Mike Tindall has had a profitable day one at the Magic Millions auctions, selling two yearlings for twice what his syndicate paid for them.

The event ambassador watched on excitedly alongside expecting wife and Royal Zara Phillips as yesterday’s first lot sold for $170,000 to Francis Cook’s Mystery Downs operation in Sydney.

It was put up by his Redwall Bloodstock syndicate and the price surged past its $120,000 reserve, allaying earlier fears being picked to go first and set the market’s tone wasn’t ideal.

As soon as the gavel went down on the horse which Redwall had paid $80,000 for, Mr Tindall’s adviser Hannah Wall turned to him and said: “We’ll take that any day of the week.”

Later, she revealed a second

Redwall filly by Star Witness sold for $180,000 having been bought for $80,000.

“Great start this morning, delighted with the start,” she said.

For Tindall, he admitted watching the first auction was “nerve-racking”.

“I have a lot of my mates who are in the syndicate so you want to text them and say it went well.”

The Rugby World Cup winning former centre said straight after the opening sale he’d be chuffed if they could “double it every time” and then a few hours later they did.

Redwall has three more lots up for sale in the coming days and Tindall has said he and his mates will review how the syndicate is going next year. They target weanlings for sale a year on, known as pinhooking.

In their first year last year they turned a “small profit” making a killing on one horse and losing out on another: “You have got to take the rough with the smooth.”

Tindall, who previously told the Bulletin he was hoping to get in a “proper” surf lesson while on the Coast, said he started the morning on the beach after a run: “Whether it was pre-match nerves I don’t know but I jumped around in the surf.

“To be on a place like the Gold Coast where you can get up at 6.30am and its 30 degrees out there and you can wander down to the beach and the beaches are always packed, it’s just a different level this place.”
