Six of the best honoured for community efforts
MAYOR Tom Tate has recognised six Gold Coasters for outstanding achievements in the community.
The locals, diverse in age and contributions, were awarded at a gala event at the Q1 in Surfers Paradise.
“Each of these winners truly deserves this recognition and acknowledgment. Their efforts are helping and motivating others to make our city a better place to live,” Cr Tate said.
Gold Coast Citizen of the Year was awarded to Karen Phillips, a journalist and public relations specialist, who has helped raise $2 million for charities.
The Gold FM Community Service Award went to ironman legend Trevor Hendy for his transformational program “Boot Camp For The Soul” and motivating people to make positive life changes.
Currumbin Hospital’s vet Dr Michael Pyne took out the Environmental Achievement Award for his relentless work in caring for injured wildlife.
The Cultural Achievement Award was awarded to artist Lisa Sorbie Martin, who has enjoyed a 35-year career as a painter, textile artist and fashion designer.
Olympic gold medallist Sally Pearson claimed the Sports Achievement Award. She is a GC2018 Ambassador and a mentor to many.
Teenager Madison Birtchnell was named Young Citizen of the Year, for her volunteer work, leadership skills and fundraising efforts.
