The debate is not over yet. Meet the Gold Coast celebrant who is refusing to marry same-sex couples. But what he’s doing is not illegal.

Alli Harrison I voted YES for same sex marriage and that was my choice... this guy has the right to choose who he marries I reckon.

Christian Austin As a gay person I’m completely fine with this person expressing their own opinions and beliefs. He hasn’t done anything wrong, it’s his choice to make, freedom of speech has a place in our society or we are all doomed. Plenty of other celebrants out there to choose from. Scott Alexander Ah, so we can have choices. Good on him for standing up to what he believes.

Kim Smith His business so should be his choice. Why would you want someone as your celebrant who didn’t want to marry you anyway?

Owen James Just because you say you’re not a bigot doesn’t make it so. Using an old book to justify your bigotry doesn’t stop it from being bigotry either. And by the way there were same-sex marriages in most cultures up until Christianity came along and forced everyone to follow their rules, so the “it’s always been between a man and a woman” argument doesn’t hold water either.

Sarah Mitchell Oh well someone else will happily make money where he turns work down ...

Frank Hezemans Good on you. Don’t trade principles for a couple of bucks.
