Relief from Coast heatwave won’t last long

- HANNAH SBEGHEN

GOLD Coasters will be have some relief from the heat today with forecasters predicting the hot spell has come to and end. But don’t rejoice too soon. Weather experts say the hot conditions will be back next weekend.

According to Weather Zone’s Tom Hough the usual average on the Gold Coast for the summer period is 29C but the weekend’s tempratures skyrocketed above this by almost 5C.

Yesterday the mercury hit 33C at the Seaway and on Saturday Gold Coasters were sweltering in 38C conditions in the western suburbs, including Upper Coomera and Pimpama.

“Yesterday was the last day of the heatwave until another one strikes up,” Mr Hough said. “The low pressure trough is moving upwards towards northern Queensland and the further it moves the more relief we are going to feel.”

Wind gusts up to 45 knots are expected to fan down the Coast for the week.

“By Wednesday it’ll be a comfortable 20C. We won’t have anything as bad as the weekend just gone by. Well, at least not until next weekend.”
