Kiwis reign in mountain bike series

- TERRY WILSON

NEW Zealand’s dominance of the Mountain Bike Australia Cross-Country National Series has been completed by stars Anton Cooper and Samara Sheppard.

The two Kiwis were too good for their rivals and took both rounds on Saturday and again yesterday.

Not even Saturday’s scorching conditions at the Nerang track had any effect, with Cooper, gold medal winner at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, taking the fourth round yesterday by 14 seconds from Cameron Ivory.

The course used yesterday was shorter than on Saturday, with races on the same track to be used for the April Commonwealth Games. On Saturday Sheppard drank almost four litres of water when she won the third round in a time of 1hr 27min21sec.

She has now won all four rounds of the 2018 series after taking the double in the opening two rounds in Orange and is certain to be riding alongside Cooper for New Zealand come April and the Games.
